Hard Lessons

The next morning, Aaron hurried to gather his books and papers for the day’s classes, not forgetting the freshly written paper he’d printed off the night before. He felt much better about the second attempt—he’d been laser focused for the rest of the evening with all his points falling into place like magic. Even if his prof graded him harder than she had on the first one, Aaron was confident that his score would be an improvement.

Aaron slung his backpack over his shoulder and opened his door and was greeted with an unexpected sight.

Seraphina—dressed in ripped and faded jeans, red high-top Converse sneakers, and an oversized gray varsity sweatshirt—was waiting for him. “Good morning,” she said, beaming at him. “I hope you don’t mind, but I grabbed us a couple of coffees—Freddy says you like cinnamon lattes, so that’s what yours is, and I got a caramel macchiato. I have no idea what that is but it sounds delicious. Even the words are fun to say. Macchiato… Aaron?”

The smile had slipped from her face when he’d failed to take the proffered cup.

“Oh,” he said, jolting back to reality and taking the cup from her hand. “Sorry. I just didn’t expect you here. You’re very chipper for so early in the morning.”

“I’m happy to see you!” she said, taking a sip of her drink. A dot of whipped cream decorated her lip when she removed the cup, which Aaron found very enticing.

“I’m happy to see you too,” he said, closing the door behind him. “Just surprised. I thought you were busy today.”

“Seven-thirty on the dot.” Seraphina licked the cream from her lip with a suggestive wink. “I know we’re both busy for the rest of the day, but I thought I could walk to class with you. I also wanted to confirm the rest of your schedule this week so I can plan when I can safely drop in without bothering you. I don’t have a phone, so I realized you can’t just call me. But Madam Bliss said its okay for you to call and leave a message at the shop if you need to get a hold of me.”

She chattered happily as they headed for the stairs and Aaron was struck by how sweet it was to have someone waiting for him, and thinking of him when he wasn’t around. “Yeah,” he said. “That would be great.”

Seraphina pulled a piece of paper from the pocket of her jeans and handed it to him. “I assume you know what to do with this,” she said. “I’m afraid I’m hopeless with technology.”

Aaron took the slip of paper and glanced down at it. It was a phone number. He laughed. “Even phones?” he said. “They’re so last century.”

Seraphina giggled and took another sip of her coffee as the descended the stairs. “You think I’m kidding, but I’m really not.” She sounded wistful for a second. “I feel like I don’t belong in this world, sometimes.”

“I feel that way too,” Aaron said, taking her hand in his.
